Get to know coach zobeck

Born and raised in Iowa, Kyle Zobeck began his soccer journey at the age of 4 playing in the Tiny Tots soccer program organized by the local parks and recreation department. Zobeck grew up playing every position on the field and attributes his initial draw to the goalkeeping position to his brother, who also played keeper. Although Zobeck stood out locally, he failed to garner any widespread attention in youth soccer until receiving an invitation to play with the ODP Region II team in 2007. His high school career ended with two State Runner-Up finishes and a scholarship offer to Valparaiso University.

Zobeck played collegiately for the Valparaiso Crusaders (Beacons) from 2008-2012 while earning his degree in mechanical engineering. During that time Zobeck was instrumental to the team’s success. He put together the best goalkeeping season in program history as a redshirt junior in 2011. That season the Iowa native posted a GAA of 0.66 and recorded 11 shutouts in 20 games in route to the team’s only Horizon League Championship. Zobeck’s record-breaking career resulted in many accolades – both athletic and academic – including a Valparaiso Male Athlete of the Year award, two Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year Awards, and a United Soccer Coaches 3rd Team Scholar All-Americas selection.

After making great strides through his collegiate career, Zobeck was drafted as the 26th overall pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft by FC Dallas. The 2013 season saw Zobeck get his first professional minutes in reserve league matches. In 2014, Zobeck signed with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL). In 4 years with the club, he collected two NASL Championships, competed in international friendlies around the world, and led the NY Cosmos reserve team to an NPSL Championship in his return from a wrist injury. Zobeck returned to play four more seasons with FC Dallas in 2018. During this second stint with the club, he played preseason games, international friendlies, and won the 2019 USL League 1 Championship playing for North Texas SC (FC Dallas’ reserve team). His MLS debut wouldn’t come until 2020 against Sporting Kansas City (D 1-1) – over eight years after his professional career began. Perseverance was a theme throughout Zobeck’s career which closed with the 2021 season as he announced his retirement.

Zobeck stepped away from the game in 2022 but returned as goalkeeper coach for North Texas SC of MLS Next Pro in 2023. Zobeck’s coaching career dates back to his time at Valparaiso University where he and his teammates led clinics for the local Boys and Girls Club and grew through this playing career. While in New York, Zobeck began training goalkeepers of all ages in individual, small group, and camp settings. He also facilitated skills sessions organized by local soccer organizations and coached U8-U10 youth teams for clubs in New York. The launch of Fundamental Goalkeeping in 2023 is the next step in Zobeck’s coaching journey as he hopes to share the lessons learned over a long career and develop the next generation of great American goalkeepers.
